Verona is forever linked with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Whenever I stand in front of Castelvecchio — the only castle of the city — the powerful and unmistakable tones of Prokofiev’s ballet Romeo and Juliet begin to resonate in my mind.

In this painting, that inner vision takes form. The fortress transforms into the stage of the Dance of the Knights, where love, passion, and fate meet in a timeless choreography set within a real place in Verona.
