During my first night in Marrakech, we witnessed a remarkable tradition: people parading rams through the streets of the ancient city. We later learned that this custom is connected to one of Morocco’s most important holidays, commemorating the biblical story of Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son.
The following day, the rams were sacrificed during family feasts. The meat was shared and eaten, while their wool and skins were used to create some of Morocco’s most celebrated crafts – beautiful carpets and fine leather goods.
This painting is a tribute to the rich traditions and deeply rooted culture of Morocco, where respect for materials and a sustainable way of life ensure that nothing goes to waste.
Part of a series exploring places, traditions, and the hidden stories carried by architecture and landscape.
